Question : What are the alternatives to Botox ?

Answer : Many patients are often wary about Botox Injections, and they are afraid that they will be too painful, or that the toxin needs to be regularly injected. Also it is worth noting that after a botox treatment it is common to have puffyness around the eyes or around the face.  In severe cases people can even have breathing problems after injections.

Another off putting point about botox is the fact that the treatments can be expensive. Although the worlds Botox is produced in Westport, Ireland by Allergan it still is more expensive here than other parts of the world. Some clinics in Dublin and Cork offer treatments from €150 – €450 for 2 to 4 sessions of injections.

One alternative to botox is Argireline. Argireline is an amino acid, which occurs naturally, which has the same effect as botox. The main difference between Botox and Argireline is that Argireline does not paralyse tissue, rather it relaxes them.  Futhermore it promotes new cell growth which will result in a smoother skin and a refreshed look. Another bonus is that it can be applied topically in a cream or gel form.

Argireline is produced by Lipotec and can be significantly cheaper than what Botox costs.

We would avoid recommending so called Facial Fillers. These are gels that are injected in the epidermis, under the skin, which provide a lifting, volumising effect and hence smoothens lines out. The risk with facial fillers is that you may have an initial reaction to the gel, the possibility of infection at the site of the injection is quite high. Also it is difficult to insure asymmetry after injections, as the gels are difficult for your doctor to control.

Other alternatives to Argireline and Botox include include more herbal remedies, but your consultants in Cork/Dublin will be able to inform you better about the options.
